Careers by Music Major

Usually the students learn by studying with composers of music and also with arrangers who generally visit the campus to present lectures, demonstrations and commissioned works.

The student will study 20th century compositional techniques, orchestration, tonal composition, counterpoint and fugue, instrumentation and tonal harmony. Music literature studied will accentuate the concert music repertoire of the 20th century and also will include main composers and shapes from the 16th to the 19th century.

The students must show skill and concepts, as well as the development of a personality for his mastery.

Careers in Composition:

Composer

A composer is responsible to create instrumental parts, either to stand-alone or to be combined with lyrics. Also they may compose for a specific circumstance such as film composers who compose music to create films or videos.

Arranger (Adaptor)

An arranger is responsible of to provide musical arrangements of a song or musical composition for an orchestra, artist, band or other ensemble. The arranger determines the tempo, harmonic structure, voice, rhythm, instrument and other aspects of a song or composition, based on the producer, artist or conductor's explanations.

Orchestrator

Usually an orchestrator is responsible for transfer music from one voice or instrument to another in order to accommodate a group or particular musician, and writing scores for an individual instrumentalist(s), choral group, vocalist(s), band or orchestra.

Copyist

A copyist is responsible of transfers musical fragment from a score on individual fragment. This person must have strong notation & replacement skills, training in music theory.

Conductor

A conductor must have a strong ability on an instrument (recommendable piano), be able to sight read, and have a solid period personality.

Educator/Teacher

The Composition Teacher generally teaches in a higher education setting such as in a university, college or conservatory. A composition teacher may also teach other topics in addition to composition, music history, music arranging, music theory, or instrumental conducting or vocal and also conduct chamber orchestras or groups.

Transcriber

Is responsible of notates musical performances on a score from a recorded performance.

Editor (print music publishing)

An editor builds and develops products for a company that it publishes books of music for people of all the ages and capacities. An editor must have the skill of being able to develop the product, to compose, to write, to correct and manage the print/production process.
