Voice as a Music Instrument


Did you know that our voice is too considered a musical instrument? When we sing our vocal cords produce a wide range of sound and tone. Here some types of voices and its' meaning.

Tenor: It's the highest male vocal range. It's lower than the alto but higher than the bass. The tenor was used mainly to play the function of a hero in an opera.

Soprano: It's the highest human vocal range, Usually, it refers to the female singing voice. However, it also applies to boys, too known as boy sopranos.

Basso or Bass: In singing, it is the lowest male voice.

Mezzo Soprano: It's the female vocal range among soprano and alto. Mezzo sopranos have a tone that is darker than sopranos but lighter than altos.

Baritone: It's the most common male vocal range. It's higher than the bass but lower than the tenor. During the 15th century composers started to add lower-pitched voices to their compositions.

Alto: In a 4-part music piece, the alto is the second highest vocal range. Normally it meant the highest male voice or a male using his falseto voice. For females, the alto voice is called contralto. Alto is lower than the soprano but higher than the tenor.
