Dulcian
Dulcian, also called renaissance bassoon or curtal.
Family: Wind, double-reed
How to play: The player places her/his lips on the reed & blows, the fingerholes are opened & closed to create different notes.
The dulcian was used in churches and as instruments in chamber music.
First Known Dulcians: One assumes that it had origin in the 16th century & replaced by the bassoon by the early 18th century.
Description: The dulcian is a precursor of the bassoon and a predecessor of the shawm. Like the shawm, it has a conical bore. Their difference is the shawm has only one bore, the dulcian has 2 and it's folded at the bottom.
