Shawm


Shawm, also refers to a family of free-reed instruments which includes the bombarde, oboe, and others.

Family:   Wind, double-reed
     
How to play:   In European shawms, a pirouette is used to support the lips & protect the reed. The piruortte is a lip ring or a wooden disk. Actually there are 3 main techniques in playing the shaw:

  • Using the aid of a pirouette.
  • Placing the reed between the lips.
  • Blowing into a windcap wherein the reed is placed.
  •      
    First Known Harmonicas:   Used during the 13th to 17th centuries, it's believed to have originated from the Middle East, however the shawm also was used in Europe, mainly for dance music and other events during the 16th centuary.
